James Emery, Iliad Quartet - Turbulence
Artist: James Emery, Iliad Quartet
Album: Turbulence
Genre: Modern Jazz
Labe: Knitting Factory
Recording Date: 1991
Guitarist James Emery is at the helm of another intense, on-the-outside group with The Illiad Quartet. Their ranks include multi-instrumentalist Marty Ehrlich, who can play soothing tones on soprano, fiery hard bop licks on alto or quasi-traditional on clarinet, as well as mix and match styles on all three. Keyboardist Rob Schwimmer is an adventurous player, as are bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Gerry Hemingway. The resulting hour-plus disc offers everything from short, funk-tinged snippets to surging dialogues, collectively improvised numbers and songs featuring rippling individual sections. It's a fine showcase for Emery to display his skills outside his customary group. ~ Ron Wynn, AMG
